Taking care of what you eat and the activities you carry out in the from the moment you know of your double self is just one aspect. There can be a number of other things that you might probably not be aware of. As a result, you might end up blaming yourself for something that you’ve not done. These are conditions that cannot be controlled as they mostly occur because of genetic developmental disorders during fetal growth. Today, in this article we shall be talking about one such condition that can lead to something called ‘Down Syndrome’ in children.
What is Down Syndrome?
Down syndrome is a genetic developmental problem which involves birth defects that reduce the child’s IQ levels and is evident in facial features. There are additional problems often involving heart conditions, having visual & hearing impairments, and much more. The severity of problems in people with down syndrome usually vary person to person and affects at least one in 800 babies. The life expectancy among adults who have down syndrome is around 60 years, although their average lifespan usually differs based on their lifestyle and overall health.
What Causes Down Syndrome?
The human body is made of two sets of 23 chromosomes (autosomes) and two chromosomes which are the sex chromosomes (allosomes). During conception, a new cell is formed which receives single copies of each chromosome from the sperm and the egg. It then divides to form an embryo, then into a foetus, and then becomes a baby. Down syndrome occurs when there’s an error in the coming together of chromosome 21. Instead of having 46 chromosomes, a person with down syndrome has 47 chromosomes. It is medically referred to as an error of chromosomal replication called trisomy 21.
Chromosomal disorders usually occur due to certain vitamin or mineral deficiencies in the mother. Another cause could be the maternal age. The risk of giving birth to a child with Down syndrome increases with age. This is because older eggs are at greater risk of improper chromosome division. Woman after the age of 35 are the ones at risk. However, it can also occur in women who are younger because of being able to conceive a number of times. Too many immediate pregnancies can be one of the main reasons for down syndrome according to various researches.
National Down Syndrome Awareness Month
World Down Syndrome Day is celebrated on the 21st of March every year, whereas, October marks the awareness month for Down Syndrome. It is a month-long global awareness campaign which has been officially declared by the United Nations since the year 2012.
The purpose of this month is to encourage those with Down Syndrome and create awareness among the public about the abilities and accomplishments of people with this disorder. They are born with delayed milestones and have fragile physical health. World Down Syndrome Month is all about our acceptance of this condition and makes the best out of their potential. Eventually, we aim at making them feel like one of us.
So join us in this initiative and spread the word across the world. Help the country and the world understand that down syndrome is just about having an extra chromosome, and they are still as wonderful as everyone else.
