If you live in an area that is mosquito infested, you definitely are at a risk of developing diseases that are caused by them. You must’ve grown up hearing about malaria and what kind of a threat it can be to you.
Malaria is one of the most dangerous diseases caused by mosquitoes. It is a common waterborne disease caused by the biting of the female anopheles mosquito, which can turn fatal if its symptoms are not caught and treated in time. The disease surfaces mostly during monsoons, when water-borne diseases are on the rise. How does malaria spread?
Malaria is likely to spread if the mosquitoes lay their eggs on contaminated and stagnant water and then bite a person with low immunity. When the mosquito bites you, a parasite is released into your bloodstream that travels to your liver, matures and starts infecting the red blood cells. The parasites multiply within 48 to 72 hours making the infected cells burst open and spreading the infection in your entire body.
How do you understand it is malaria?
Malaria shows signs and symptoms of infection in the following ways,
- Chills from moderate to severe
- High fever
- Profuse sweating
- Abdominal pain
- Muscle pain
- Bloody stools
if the condition is left unaddressed and untreated, it can cause,
- Swelling of the blood vessels of the brain, or cerebral malaria
- Accumulation of fluid in the lungs that causes breathing problems, or pulmonary edema
- Organ failure of the kidneys, liver, or spleen
- Anemia due to the destruction of red blood cells
How is the Condition diagnosed?
There are smear blood tests available to diagnose malaria, monitor for relapses, and to determine drug susceptibility of the parasite causing the infection.
