Most Indian married couples are expected to start having children within a stipulated time after their wedding. With raised eyebrows asking for ‘good news’ soon, many married couples shun social interactions because of their inability to have a baby.
That inability, in medical terms, is known as infertility, which means a condition where a sexually active couple is unable to conceive for over a year. Infertility can exist moth in men and women, and in this blog, we explore the subject of male infertility.
For the longest time in Indian communities and societies, infertility has been a taboo and a bane. Many families still refuse to approach medical professionals for guidance when they fail to conceive. Male infertility has been considered an even greater cause of embarrassment than infertility in women.
But times are changing and so is the mindset of people, which has brought in a huge change in their approach to the issue that is considered sensitive. This blog is to initiate awareness and normalisation about the fact that men can also be the reason for not being able to conceive, to facilitate you with information about what could be wrong and what should be done about it. So let’s get to understand the less talked about issue of male infertility.
One out of three infertility cases are in men. Primarily, there are five types of male infertility, they are mentioned below
Quantity of Sperm-
One of the most common reasons for male infertility is caused due to a very low count of sperms or no sperms at all, in the semen. A sperm count which is lower than 15 million per millilitre of semen is considered low and it is advisable to get it ruled out and consult a specialist to be able to treat it.
Quality of sperm-
While the quantity plays a huge role in male infertility, the quality does so too. Sperm mobility is very important for conception because the sperm needs travel to the fallopian tube to make fertilization possible. Defining an abnormal sperm is difficult but it has got a lot to do with the shape of the sperm, which plays an important role in helping it to travel faster to the fallopian tube to meet with the egg and fertilize.
A lot of men suffer disorders of ejaculation which majorly impacts fertility. Disorders that contribute to infertility are,
- Premature ejaculation, that does not allow penetration making it difficult for the sperm to enter the uterus.
- Retrograde ejaculation, when the semen enters the bladder instead of the penis during orgasm, resulting in very less semen causing male infertility.
Total failure to ejaculate also impacts fertility.
Men who smoke, engage in excessive alcoholism, consume illegal drugs, engage in unsafe sex, take medication or steroids etc. are likely to face male infertility. These factors usually end up blocking the sperm passage, thus becoming a vital cause for male infertility.
It is needless to point out that sperms do not survive in the environment we live in, they die within seconds of exposure to our environment. Sperms are delicate cells that need to be in a conducive environment to be able to work well. Testicles are responsible to keep the sperms in good and healthy condition under the right temperature. Any impact on the testicles can affect the quality of the sperm.
Now that you understand the possibilities of what could be going wrong, we highly recommend you and your partner to visit a specialist and get the disorder ruled out so that it could be treated and cured.
