Comprehensive Allergy Testing and Treatment
Allergies are among the most common health problems, with more than 50 million Americans afflicted with asthma, seasonal hay fever, or other allergy-related conditions each year.
Some allergies, such as a mild case of hay fever, might not require any treatment or can be controlled with the occasional use of over-the-counter medications. Others can interfere with day-to-day activities, lower quality of life, or even become life-threatening.
Through our multidisciplinary approach, UT Southwestern offers expertise in diagnosis and treatment to allergies, such as those related to:
- Pollens, molds, dust mites, and pets
- Food, drugs, latex, and stinging insects
- Skin disorders, such as atopic and contact dermatitis (eczema), urticaria (hives), and angioedema (welts)
- Chronic sinusitis and allergic rhinitis
Both our Allergy Service and Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) Service help patients reduce and even eliminate troublesome symptoms such as:
- Itching eyes, nose, and throat
- Runny nose
- Sore throat
- Teary eyes
After a comprehensive evaluation, our specialists discuss the treatments available for each patient’s specific condition.
Our Allergy Service offers comprehensive care such as:
- Allergen skin testing
- Pulmonary-function testing
- Advanced anti-immunoglobulin (IgE) therapy
- Drug desensitization therapy for patients who are allergic to medications necessary for their health
To help with diagnosis and allergy evaluation, our specialists are experts at administering food and drug challenges as well as performing laboratory and radiology studies, such as computed tomography (CT) scans of the sinuses or lungs, to determine contributing factors.
For children and adults with serious allergies to insect stings (including fire ants), UT Southwestern provides venom immunotherapy shots to reduce the chance of a life-threatening reaction to a future sting.
We match therapies to patients’ specific profiles and provide the most effective immunotherapy (allergy shots), medications, and other approaches needed to improve health and quality of life.
Our physicians partner with patients in discussing and setting allergen-avoidance strategies that can make an important difference in treatment.
